Unveiling the Cinematic Thrill: Behind-the-Scenes of Gran Turismo

In the adrenaline-fuelled production of Gran Turismo (Sony Pictures), Lewis Andrews worked with the VFX vendor UPP across five different countries – Hungary (Budapest), Germany, Slovakia, Austria, UAE (Dubai), and Japan. Based on real life events, the film promises an action-packed storyline with amazing VFX visuals for automotive and gaming enthusiasts alike. The movie was shot using real life racing cars on famous tracks around the world.

Lewis Andrews’ role as Lead VFX Data Wrangler involved collecting on-set VFX data. VFX Supervisor and Founder of UPP, Viktor Müller was the driving force behind the visual effects department. Müller is the visionary behind UPP Visual Effects & Post Production House based in Prague, Czech Republic.

The VFX team’s primary focus was on harnessing the power of LiDAR to capture 3D environments and photogrammetry of iconic race tracks such as the Hungaroring, Red Bull Ring, and Dubai Autodrome and UPP’s cyber scanning of real race cards.

Renowned for his ground-breaking works in movies like District 9 and Chappie, director Neill Blomkamp set out to create an immersive experience that blurs the lines between reality and cinema.

Working on the set of Gran Turismo was akin to navigating a real racetrack, with live racing events unfolding to capture the genuine essence of high-speed competition. The director’s insistence on authenticity propelled the team to collaborate with race organizers, ensuring that the on-screen racing sequences were not merely simulated but unfolded in real time.

Budapest, with its picturesque landscapes and historic architecture, served as a captivating backdrop for some of the movie’s most riveting scenes. The team’s meticulous HDRI photography in this vibrant city contributed to the film’s visual richness, capturing the essence of European charm juxtaposed against the raw energy of racing.

Germany and Austria provided the perfect canvas for the team to capture the legendary Red Bull Ring in all its glory. The LiDAR team meticulously scanned the race tracks and surrounding landscapes, preserving every nuance that makes these circuits iconic in the world of motorsports.

The team’s work in Slovakia extended beyond the racetracks, capturing the scenic beauty that complements the breakneck speed of the on-screen races.

Dubai, with its futuristic skyline and state-of-the-art racing facilities, became a beacon for the convergence of technology and adrenaline. The LiDAR team’s precise scanning of the Dubai Autodrome ensured that every twist and turn of the track was reproduced on the silver screen.

Tokyo, a city synonymous with innovation, presented a fitting finale for the international filming locations. The team’s adept use of HDRI photography captured the neon-lit streets and iconic landmarks, creating a stunning juxtaposition to the high-speed racing that unfolds within the movie.
