Retro Stardom Encapsulated in Artist Jake Molloy’s Overtime
Jake Molloy, a talented artist based in Manchester, recently released a music video for his new single Overtime. Directed creatively by Lewis Andrews, the music video gives life to the lyrics, which express Molloy’s deep-seated aspiration to excel in his musical career, the sense of betrayal from friends, and the struggle of balancing a day job while pursuing his musical dreams.
Drawing inspiration from the 70s, the video’s visual style resonates with a docu-feel, achieved through a handheld camera technique. The essence of Molloy’s daily grind is captured in scenes depicting his part-time job at a mechanic’s workshop. In these shots, Molloy is seen daydreaming about his performances and ambitions, symbolising his unrelenting pursuit of his dreams.
Attention to detail was paramount, especially when it came to the wardrobe selection for the beach scene. In creating a retro-inspired, disco funk VHS style, the clothing, particularly the jacket, was carefully chosen to be reflective and reminiscent of Harry Styles’ Gucci-inspired red-carpet look.
The dream sequence of the video was filmed on the beaches of the River Thames in London. Shot during the summer’s golden hour, with the sun setting in the backdrop, the scene made use of a 5-point star filter and black promist filter. The unique usage of light bouncing off the water, combined with handheld directional light pointed at Molloy’s sequin jacket, creates a captivating starlit, sparkling effect. Despite the expected greyness of the Thames, the scene gives off a vibrant, Miami Beach-like aura, symbolising Molloy’s dream of stardom.
