RED KOMODO-X Drone Array — Built for Drone Deployment

Wonderfilm’s 3-Way RED KOMODO-X VFX Array isn’t just built for the ground — its drone configuration has been engineered specifically to solve the biggest problem in aerial VFX plate capture: weight. Every kilogram on a heavy-lift drone platform like the DJI Alta X costs flight time, and flight time is what a DOP actually needs on set.

Lightweight Without Compromise

Where a fully-loaded three-camera array can easily push toward, or past, a drone’s usable payload margin, Wonderfilm’s drone-configured array comes in at 9.2kg — comfortably under typical heavy-lift payload ceilings, and lighter than competing array systems, without dropping a single feature. That weight saving comes from careful engineering of the rig’s centre of gravity, reducing the counterbalance load rather than stripping capability, so productions get more flight time per battery and a wider safety margin in challenging conditions.

Full Feature Set, Airborne

Every camera in the array retains full wireless multi-camera and lens control via the Teradek Bolt 6 ecosystem (operational up to 1,500ft), genlock and timecode synchronisation across all three RED KOMODO-X bodies, complete ND filtration per lens, and live wireless video transmission for real-time monitoring and playback — all fully functional in the air, not just on the ground.

Technical Specification

  • 3 Ă— RED KOMODO-X cameras — 19.9MP Super 35mm global shutter sensors, 6144 Ă— 3240px, up to 80fps, 16.5+ stops dynamic range
  • 3 Ă— ZEISS 21mm T2.9 CP.3 XD lenses — 65.5° horizontal FOV each, with ZEISS eXtended Data for frame-accurate lens distortion and shading metadata
  • 15,008 Ă— 3240px stitched plate, 160° total field of view, with 27.9% overlap between adjacent cameras for reliable stitching
  • Fits within the payload limits of the DJI Ronin 2 3-axis stabiliser, for use on heavy-lift drones or as a ground/vehicle-mounted rig
  • Full turnkey setup, operational on set in under 30 minutes

Why Hire the Drone Array?

Is an operator or technician included?
Yes — a Wonderfilm technician is on set for every drone array job, working directly with the DOP and VFX supervisor on setup, stitched deliverables, FOV calibration and virtual production application.

Can Wonderfilm stitch the plates after filming?
Yes — Wonderfilm offers full plate-stitching services in-house, post-production, in addition to live stitching review on set.

What makes the drone configuration different from the standard array?
The drone build is optimised specifically for minimum weight and centre-of-gravity balance, so productions get maximum flight time on heavy-lift platforms without losing any of the array’s core features — multicam control, genlock/timecode sync, wireless video, or ND filtration.

Recently deployed on a major upcoming international TV series, the drone-configured KOMODO-X array has already proven itself under demanding weather conditions in the field, with the production’s DOP requesting it again for future work.

Tech Spec

Wonderfilm Pictures’ RED KOMODO-X VFX Array caters for large-scale productions looking for a practical VFX drone plate shoot solution. This lightweight configuration fits onto the DJI Ronin 2 and is ready for use on heavy-lifter drones. Contact us to discuss your specific rig requirements..

Every array assembly is designed and built in-house, so the configuration is matched to the job rather than the other way round. Whether the rig is going onto a gimbal, a heavy-lift drone, a tracking vehicle or a static mount, we can build or adapt an assembly to suit the payload, the platform and the shot.

Components are machined from aluminium sheet, with thickness selected for the application — lighter where every kilogram costs flight time, heavier where the rig has to take load on the ground. The standard Ronin 2 configuration sits comfortably inside the gimbal’s maximum payload, accessories included.

All our assemblies are lined with M4, 1/4″-20 and 3/8″ mounting threads for effectively unlimited mounting options, and each carries a detachable custom cheese plate at the base for additional mounting and threading.

If a shoot calls for a configuration we don’t already hold, talk to us. The assemblies are our own design, so we can build to the requirement.

Our VFX array is equipped with a matched set of ZEISS CP.3 XD 21mm lenses, ensuring uniformity throughout the stitched image. The CP.3 lenses showcase ZEISS’s renowned clarity and precision, boasting full-frame coverage ideally suited for the RED KOMODO-X cameras. ZEISS eXtended Data Technology captures essential lens data for post-production teams, aiding in achieving optimal stitching results.

ZEISS eXtended Data

The ZEISS eXtended Data (XD) technology, based on the Cooke /i* technology, introduces enhanced opportunities for simplifying and improving the precision of workflows in image capture and processing, particularly in VFX. XD is a distinctive technology that also delivers real-time data on the lens’ distortion and shading characteristics.

ZEISS eXtended Data enhances efficiency and cost-effectiveness in VFX, especially for compositing material from our Array which provides frame-accurate details on:

  • Lens distortion characteristics dependent on the focal point
  • Lens shading characteristics related to the focal point and effective T-stop

ZEISS Cooke /i* technology offers crucial lens data that delivers frame-accurate details on various aspects:

  • Lens Name, type, and focal length of the lens
  • Calibrated focusing distance
  • Calibrated T-stop value
  • Real-time depth-of-field data and hyperfocal distance
  • Horizontal field of view
  • Position of the entrance pupil

Wonderfilm’s VFX Array utilises the power of the Teradek ecosystem with the Bolt 6 LT 1500 feet TX/RX Deluxe kit and CTRL.5 controller. This kit enables wireless multiple-lens iris/focus control, run/stop triggering, and multiple-camera video playback. Everything on the rig can be controlled or monitored remotely up to 1500 feet away.

Our Array produces a stitched image with (160° FOV), including a 27.9% overlap for reliable vendor processing. We understand that every vendor has a different set of requirements for their Array workflow, so we designed a simple, live stitching review system which can accommodate all scales of productions.
