Director Lewis Andrews breaks down the creative process behind BAZA, his UK-Drill-meets-Dune music video for artist Richard Akam. Instead of following the usual visual codes of the genre, Andrews reimagines the world of Arrakis through a drill lens, bringing Denis Villeneuve–scale ambition into independent music filmmaking.
The article explores how a single frame from Dune: Part Two sparked the concept, leading Andrews to blend Hans Zimmer–inspired duduk compositions with his own drill-infused production. He details how the music was built from the ground up, working with duduk composer Armen Kostani and sound engineer Shane Shanahan to push the track into a haunting, experimental space.
Andrews also reveals the logistical and visual challenges of capturing an Arrakis-like aesthetic on location, ultimately shooting in Spain’s Bardenas Reales with Demobaza costumes, RED KOMODO-X, and Atlas Orion anamorphics. The piece dives into his heavy VFX and colour-managed post-production pipeline, the design of “The Black Dog” spaceship, and the philosophy behind balancing realism, CG, and world-building.
This intro sets the stage for the full article, where Andrews goes deeper into inspiration, sound design, VFX, Resolve workflows, and the evolution of BAZA from concept to final release.
