Princess of Symmetry stands out as an experimental piece that enhanced Lewis Andrews’ portfolio, showcasing his adeptness with handheld Steadicam and gimbal techniques. The innovative use of gimbal work, both on foot and mounted on a Segway, captured attention and led to an influx of music video clients drawn to Lewis’s style.

Originally intended as a behind-the-scenes glimpse into photographer Christian Couzens’ editorial shoot featuring model Charlotte Maslin Knight, the project took a creative turn under Lewis’s direction. Transforming into a dynamic showreel of gimbal camera tracks of the model, the video unfolds in the gritty urban landscapes of London’s council estates.

Rather than simply documenting the editorial shoot, Lewis developed the footage into a visually driven fashion film built around movement, rhythm and location. The contrast between Charlotte’s composed performance and the raw architectural surroundings gave the piece a distinctive identity, combining elegance with an urban edge.

The camera remains in near-constant motion, following, circling and gliding alongside the model as she moves through walkways, courtyards and open concrete spaces. Handheld Steadicam shots introduce a controlled sense of immediacy, while the gimbal and Segway sequences create longer, smoother tracking movements that would have been difficult to achieve on foot alone.

A VHS-inspired visual style was incorporated throughout the edit to give the footage an aged, analogue quality. The degraded textures, softened detail and retro character contrasted with the precision of the modern camera movement, adding another distinctive layer to the finished film.

Princess of Symmetry became an important demonstration of Lewis’s ability to create energetic images with compact camera-support systems. Its inventive movement and confident fashion-film aesthetic attracted attention from artists and producers seeking dynamic music video work, helping establish a visual style defined by fluid tracking shots, bold locations and a connection between camera movement, subject and music.
