Crafting the Fantastical: A VFX Odyssey Behind Damsel Starring Millie Bobby Brown
Embark on a journey into the mystical realm of Damsel, where the magic of storytelling converges with ground-breaking visual effects. Lewis Andrews’s job as the VFX Data Wrangler included collecting vital on-set data essential for the collation of visual effects in post-production. Lewis Andrews worked closely with VFX Supervisor Nick Brooks and VFX Assistant Producer (AP) Jimmy Udo, who are renowned for their exceptional work on IT.
In this spellbinding tale, Millie Bobby Brown takes the lead as a young woman thrust into a perilous trap after agreeing to marry a seemingly charming prince. The stellar ensemble cast, featuring luminaries such as Robin Wright, Angela Bassett, Ray Winstone, and Nick Robinson from Maid, promises to bring the fantastical narrative to life.
The visionary Director of Photography, Larry Fong, celebrated for his work on films like Super 8, lends his expertise to Damsel, crafting a visual spectacle that enhances the film’s fantasy aesthetics. Fong’s use of vibrant lighting and a haunted fairy-tale palette amplifies the enchantment, creating a world where every frame is a work of art.
Working in the Netflix studio in Enfield, UK, Lewis Andrews worked in the VFX team with 2nd Unit Director/2nd Unit VFX Director of Photography Steven Hall. Lewis and the team worked from a boat serving as the unit base and shot drone plates in the Portuguese wine region countryside along the river Ribeira do Arroio.
Damsel was a creative Netflix project that used lots of VFX elements and incredible set design.
