The Blackmagic Video Assist 5″ 3G combines three tools in one compact unit — a monitor, a broadcast-quality recorder and a full set of scopes — for any camera with a 3G-SDI or HDMI output. It records all formats up to 1080p60, making it a practical upgrade for consumer cameras with small displays and for older broadcast bodies that need modern file formats.

The 5-inch touchscreen is the main advantage on a long shoot. Rigged where the operator, focus puller or director can actually see it, it removes hours of leaning into a viewfinder, and adds focus peaking, focus zoom, zebra and false colour to cameras that don’t offer them. Overlays are fully customisable, so timecode, audio meters, frame guides and file information can be added or cleared as needed.

Built-in waveform, vectorscope, histogram and RGB parade scopes make it a portable compliance and exposure tool, viewable full screen or as a picture-in-picture over live video. Support for 17-point and 33-point 3D LUTs means log footage can be monitored with the intended look applied, rather than flat and washed out.

Recording is to a single SD card in 10-bit Apple ProRes or Avid DNx, so files drop straight into DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut without transcoding. Dual Sony L-Series battery slots allow batteries to be swapped without interrupting a take.
