Filming the Prehistoric: VFX and Cinematography on Walking with Dinosaurs 2025
When Walking with Dinosaurs first hit screens in 1999, it revolutionised television. Blending CGI with natural history storytelling, it brought prehistoric life to audiences as never before.
Now in 2025, the BBC has returned with Walking with Dinosaurs 2025, a six-part epic that once again combines cutting-edge science, world-class visual effects and stunning global locations. The result is a series that feels as vivid and immersive as real life.
Lewis Andrews was part of the international team of filmmakers and VFX specialists who helped realise this ambitious vision. Shooting in Canada, Portugal and the Canary Islands, the production demanded collaboration and adaptability. Unlike big feature films with rigid hierarchies, this felt like true filmmaking—everyone pulling together to get the job done.
Andrews contributed by capturing VFX plates on his RED KOMODO, many of which were chosen by director Owen Goer and integrated with material from award-winning DOP Paul Williams. He also worked closely with BAFTA-nominated cinematographer Neil Harvey and directors Tom Hewitson and Stephen Cooter. Using storyboards and early CG previews from Lola Post Production, Andrews ensured his footage matched creative needs.
As Lead VFX Data Wrangler, Andrews also managed crucial data: photogrammetry, lens grids, and HDRI lighting references, all vital for ensuring dinosaurs appeared at the correct scale and interacted believably with their environments. He designed a custom database to organise this data, streamlining the post-production process at Envy Post and Milk VFX.
Walking with Dinosaurs 2025 premiered in the UK in May and in the US in June.
