The DJI Ronin 2 is a high-performance three-axis gimbal built for professional camera packages rather than lightweight setups. Integrated GPS assists stabilisation during vehicle and aerial work, while high-torque motors in a splash-proof enclosed design hold heavier builds steady in wind, rain and the kind of conditions that stop lesser rigs. Its payload capacity accommodates full cinema camera builds with lenses, matte boxes, wireless video and follow focus fitted, so a camera does not need stripping down to fly.

That capacity is why it sits at the centre of so much of our own work. The Ronin 2 is the primary head for our RED KOMODO-X VFX Array, carrying three synchronised camera bodies with matched ZEISS lenses inside its payload limit — a configuration most gimbals in this class cannot take. The same rig moves between a tracking vehicle, a crane arm and a heavy-lift drone without rebuilding, which is what makes a full day of varied plate coverage practical.

Supplied with the XM2 Exoskeleton, the Ronin 2 can be operated handheld, on a support vest for extended takes, mounted to a vehicle, flown, or run from a remote head with a second operator on the wheels. Dual hot-swappable batteries mean power can be changed mid-shoot without powering down and rebalancing, and the built-in power distribution runs the camera and accessories from the same source rather than a cluster of separate batteries and cables.

Control comes through the Ronin 2 app and built-in wireless receivers, with SmoothTrack behaviour, motor stiffness and axis limits all adjustable on the fly. Setups can be saved and recalled between configurations, so a rig balanced for a tracking vehicle in the morning can be reconfigured for handheld work after lunch without starting from scratch.
