South Wales carries one of the strongest concentrations of high-end drama in the UK. Wolf Studios Wales in Cardiff Bay, Roath Lock, Seren Stiwdios and Dragon Studios near Bridgend between them host returning series, features and long-form drama, much of it effects-heavy. The region has been the home of British television science fiction and fantasy for two decades, and that work runs on clean plates, environment builds and set extension.
Bannau Brycheiniog, the Gower coast, the Valleys and the industrial heritage sites at Blaenavon give a range of exteriors within an hour or two of the Cardiff stages, and they double for everything from other worlds to period industry. Our RED KOMODO-X VFX Array records 15K stitched plates across a 160° field of view with 27.9% overlap, which suits wide environment capture for CG set extension and virtual production backplates.
VFX Array and VFX Ball kits are available for on-set VFX capture, clean plates and lighting reference. The chrome and grey reference balls give compositors accurate lighting data from the set, and the ZEISS CP.3 XD lenses supply extended data for distortion mapping and undistortion, so material arrives at the vendor in a usable state.
Cardiff is around three hours from our base in London, so hires here are usually planned rather than last-minute. We work to the production schedule — kit sent ahead of a shoot week, held for the run of a block, or travelling with the unit — with prep, testing and technician support arranged in advance. The array arrives as a turnkey build ready to shoot in under thirty minutes.
